About Shay's Creative Process
My creative process begins before I find myself in the studio, it's always happening. I document my personal experiences from day-to-day situations, noting the funny moments, the things that piss me off, and that make my heart hurt or feel good. During a rehearsal, I look for ways to physicalize these ideas into imagery, noticing the feelings that come up. With my dancers, I am very direct in the instruction of movement; I notice immediately if the task that is given to them evokes the emotions I’m looking for. This usually involves lots of laughter, as moments in the studio tend to get vulnerable.

Do you work in other mediums other than dance? Any other special talents?
I work in costume and fashion design, am a singer/songwriter, a visual artist and a pretty big know it all. :-) I'm also a black belt in Taekwondo.

We’re all physical beings! What’s your favorite part of the body and why?
The mouth, especially the teeth. I can't help but notice the articulation as focal to the eating experience. Also kissing is a blast.

Say what you want to say! Have a quote you live by?
Things aren’t that serious. Keep life in context and enjoy yourself!
