Crabs in a Bucket / Paige is not a Lesbian
by Ashley R.T. Yergens
When you catch a crab and place her in a bucket, the first thing she’ll try to do is escape. When two crabs are placed in a bucket, as soon as one tries to climb up out of the bucket, the other will pull the escaping crab back down and try to escape itself. Enter the Midwestern lesbian prom that Ashley never had. Here, we’ll recognize the “buckets” we keep each other in and have a queerness competition.
Ashley R.T. Yergens, from Faribault, Minnesota, debuted Is this more ladylike? at the Walker Art Center as a part of the 2014 Choreographers’ Evening in November. Recently, she showed Is this more ladylike?/ A Generic Female Solo as a Volume V, Issue I Current Sessions Artist. Her work is a byproduct of growing up on tater tots and WWE SmackDown, being queer in small town USA, and bonding with blue collars.
Also billed for the evening is Jon + Larissa Velez-Jackson's Yackez.
