Sanity involves a certain level of impersonation and suppression. What we put out into the world as our most authentic self is often nothing more than a glossy varnish but what would happen if we truly “let our freak flag fly?” Brendan Drake Choreography’s The Big Finish incorporates text and movement framed by thoughts on queerness, vanity, isolation, and suicide to examine the thin veneer of public decency and the unraveling of ego.
BASED is a new group work from seymour::dancecollective that seeks to identify they ways in which we stabilize ourselves as individuals and as a society. Taking a “millennial” approach, the collective presents this exploration through a dominant physical performance that is equal parts dance party and litmus test. With references to literary sub-cultures, religious sects, pop culture, and music ranging from gospel to trap, BASED questions the importance of personal perspective and self-actualization in a culture dominated by group thinking and gut reactions.
