LAB // SESSIONS: BUILDING NARRATIVE
WITH ROYA CARRERAS

Wednesdays, April 5 + 12, 2017 from 12pm to 2pm
Improvisation/Composition - Contemporary Modern and/or Theatrical Experience

Class Price: $5; Purchase your class ahead of time, as classes are kept small and intimate.

Theatrical, Emotionally-Charged, Metaphoric - Lead by artist Roya Carreras, this LAB begins with a warmup rooted in somatic practice, followed by group and solo improvisational tasks incorporating dramaturgy. Following, we will learn phrase work from The Big Balloon, to then combine with improvisational research, creating and presenting our own compositions.

Inspired by film noir, theater, performance art, and visual art, Roya’s work is rooted in the creation of emotionally and psychologically charged narratives. Her movement investigates impulse, clarity, form, and freedom. These LABs will take place at Arts on Site in the East Village, are co-hosted by The Playground, and are organized in relation to the 'TCS x Roya Carreras: The Big Balloon' performances.

Arts On Site is a Non-Profit Organization in the East Village dedicated to supporting artists of all disciplines by offering affordable studio rental space and a diverse calendar of classes, events, and workshops.

The Playground (NYC) launches an innovative network of exchanges through merging professional dancers and choreographers; provides a movement lab that is financially accommodating, easily accessible, and artistically rewarding for all of its participants; and establishes a place for the dance community to grow, unite, and share ideas uninhibitedly.

LAB // SESSIONS, TCS's workshop series, values movement research, experimentation and collaboration during the creative process for choreographers, performance-based artists, as well as people who want to move their bodies. LABs act as a platform for emerging artists to develop their practice as educational facilitators, as attendees are encouraged to provide feedback at the end of each class.
